Canal Road Interchange with I-10 in Gulfport | Mississippi

Client: Mississippi Department of Transportation

canal road

ABMB is currently involved in designing the Canal Road Interchange with I-10 in Gulfport, Mississippi.  The new freeway will extend from the Port of Gulfport at US 90 north to Interstate 10 in Harrison County.  Before Hurricane Katrina in 2005, part of the work was completed, but afterward, the circumstances surrounding construction were altered.

Currently, the project is in the final design phase and this interchange will be the first and largest of its kind in the state of Mississippi and one of the largest in the Southeastern United States.  Twenty-two bridges will be used to make all of the roadway connections.  Of these bridges, ABMB is responsible for designing 14 of them.  There are several challenges that ABMB faces with the design including complex bridge geometrics and a curved steel plate girder bridge.  Throughout the project, ABMB has been able to effectively manage all of the challenging aspects of the project in order to present the best final project.
