LA 8 at Harrisonburg

Client: Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development

When the Louisiana Department of Transportation asked ABMB to survey and design the approaches for a new bridge over the Ouachita River at Harrisonburg, Louisiana, they thought the assignment was pretty straightforward. The existing swing-span bridge, built in the 1930s, was structurally deficient, and LADOTD had identified a site for a new replacement bridge one mile south of town.

ABMB reviewed all the constraints including 4(f) property and wetland issues, defining the design criteria, and developing an alternative route. We presented this solution to the department and at public meetings. The department decided to adopt the new route, which is undergoing environmental review. Once this is completed, ABMB will once again take up work on designing the roadway approaches.
