The Hale-Boggs Bridge, located along U.S. 310, spanning the Mississippi River from Luling to Destrahan, Louisiana, is one of the most complicated undertakings ABMB’s survey team has performed to date. The purpose of this project was to gather data on existing conditions for a future rehabilitation design. The team performed structural and topographic surveys, located critical horizontal and vertical support members of the bridge, derived cross-sections of the deck showing existing elevations, travel-ways, drainage and striping, gathered exact locations of all tie-down cross girders, and verified main pier alignments. In addition, the project team surmounted several unique challenges, such as maintaining the safety of its crew while working at heights of nearly 500 feet above water and negotiating the heavy traffic in constant flow on the bridge. The project is now being implemented, and LADOTD is currently undertaking a replacement of all cable-stays for the entire bridge, a process never before performed in North America.
